Managing Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma Course

The Managing Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma (MOET) Course is an advanced emergency management and resuscitation course devised by and for anaesthetists and obstetricians. It is designed to improve knowledge, skills and confidence in dealing with serious and life-threatening conditions in obstetrics.

MOET is a 3-day course, which combines lectures, emergency drills, scenario training, small group workshops and demonstrations to teach and reinforce knowledge and skills acquired by the candidates. There is continuous assessment of progress during the course, as well as an MCQ and OSCE exam. The course is comparable to the Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) course and Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) course.

A course programme is available at: http://www.moetaustralia.com.au/MOET_Programme.pdf

The first MOET Courses in Australia were held in November 2009, in Sydney. There were a series of courses aimed at training the initial instructors to allow the course to expand throughout Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

The course is likely to cost A$2,200 and NZ$2,000 plus GST.

Further dates for 2010 are likely to be:
  • 25-27 March, Adelaide (just after RANZCOG ASM)
  • 2-4 July, Wellington, New Zealand
  • 28-30 September, Melbourne (just before ISOM)
  • 4-5 November, Sydney (a Generic Instructor Course will be held prior to this).
