Neolithic surgeons are thought to have  been capable of amputations in "relatively aseptic conditions" about 6900 years ago and to have used the hallucinogenic effects from the toxic datura plant as an anaesthetic, as quoted in the journal, Antiquity.

Permanent position available immediately. Counties Manukau District Health Board provides a quality healthcare service to a large and fast-growing multi-cultural community in the south of New Zealand's largest city. It operates over two sites, Middlemore Hospital, an 860 bed hospital with 11 operating theatres, and Manukau Surgical Centre, a purpose built elective surgical unit of 78 beds and 10 operating theatres with a separately staffed Perioperative Care Unit.

There is a wide range of clinical sub-specialties to tertiary level, including the National Burns Unit, but excluding cardiothoracic and neurosurgery. A variety of terms and conditions of employment can be considered for the right applicant, including flexible hours of work, the option to work on-call or not as desired, and a negotiable start date. A broad scope of tertiary level clinical capabilities, a commitment to teaching and to continuing medical education are essential, as is a strong focus on continuing quality improvement, development and administration of departmental activities are essential. There is a large variety of clinical work, both adult and paediatric; an Acute Pain Service, an Anaesthetic Preadmission Service, a busy Obstetric Unit, and a strong focus on Regional Anaesthesia.

The environment is challenging, but friendly and supportive. There is a heavy acute workload, requiring specialist cover on-site in the evenings and weekend days to support 22 Registrars and SHO's. This is covered by the On-Call System. FANZCA or equivalent is required, and registration with the New Zealand Medical Council is essential. National Women’s Health at Auckland City Hospital is a tertiary provider of Women’s Health and Neonatal Services for the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand. The hospital has specialised Maternal Foetal Medicine and Gynaecological Oncology services, and there are approximately 8000 births annually. A wide variety of pathology is seen and we have good multidisciplinary support.

We provide anaesthesia and analgesia for obstetrics and gynaecology for National Women’s Health. Approximately 3500 neuraxial procedures are done by us annually. In addition we have a very active pain team for the management of both acute and chronic pain.

We have two positions available for Specialist Anaesthetists for a fixed-term of one year starting from December 2010 and June 2011 respectively. These positions would ideally suit newly qualified anaesthetists with an interest in Obstetric and Gynaecological Anaesthesia. Opportunity exists to become involved in research and quality assurance. The Department of Anaesthesia is a friendly department with a wide skill range provided by 20 full and part-time consultants, a fellow, 7 registrars and 3 pain nurses.

Cardiothoracic/ORL Anaesthetists

The Green Lane Department of Cardiothoracic and ORL Anaesthesia is New Zealand’s largest cardiac surgical unit based in Auckland. We have active TOE, transplant, research and training services and perform a wide range of tertiary ORL and cardiothoracic procedures.

We are looking for locum or permanent full-time specialist Anaesthetists with cardiothoracic and TOE experience. Ability to anaesthetise for major head and neck surgery is essential. You should be eligible for vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.
