Neolithic surgeons are thought to have  been capable of amputations in "relatively aseptic conditions" about 6900 years ago and to have used the hallucinogenic effects from the toxic datura plant as an anaesthetic, as quoted in the journal, Antiquity.

The NZSA produces a quarterly newsletter containing articles of interest to anaesthetists in New Zealand.
