DENVER — A long-running dispute over whether nurses should be allowed to administer anaesthesia without doctor supervision has been playing out here and around the country in recent months.

Benefits of Membership

There are several reasons why Trainees stand to benefit from joining the NZSA:

1.    The NZSA, since being set up in 1948, has had a long and proven history of safe-guarding the professional interests of New Zealand anaesthetists.

2.    Trainee members receive a heavily discounted membership rate with full benefits of membership. These include discounts when joining the Air New Zealand Koru Club and discounted purchases with Duty Free Stores (DFS) NZ.

3.    The Anaesthesia & Intensive Care journal is sent free to all NZSA members, along with online access. This is the only Australasian peer-reviewed anaesthesia journal and is the home-journal of the NZSA, ASA and ANZICS. It is not available through the ANZCA online journal access system.

4.    The NZSA produces a quarterly newsletter containing articles of interest to anaesthetists in New Zealand. New Zealand Anaesthesia has updates on medico-political developments of importance to New Zealand anaesthetists and items of educational interest. It is distributed in hard copy at no cost to NZSA members. In addition, there is an electronic newsletter, the e-zine, which is emailed to members 1-2 times a month.

5.    The members-only Trainee Portal includes the following:

  1. Information on subspecialty fellowships in NZ, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and United States.
  2. References to useful journal articles, categorised by Part 1 and Part 2 study topics
  3. Links to various online learning resources (e.g. Part 1 & 2 study courses, important college publications, regional anaesthesia tutorials, various lectures  and presentations)
  4. Resources on welfare issues

6.    Access to conference discounts applicable to NZSA members (e.g. AQUA and the ASA National Scientific Congress).

7.    Trainee members have access to the Anaesthesia Research Review via the NZSA website, which highlights new important research publications in anaesthesia.

8.    The opportunity to be part of an organisation that is heavily involved in medico-political and welfare issues affecting NZ anaesthetists, offering a local and national perspective to these matters.  The NZSA recently provided the trainee representation in the Anaesthesia Resource Review Group, authoring a report which was formally submitted to Health Workforce NZ in March 2011.

9.    The NZSA is a member of the WFSA which gives the Society a broad focus through exposure to international events in anaesthesia education.  This also facilitates opportunities for working in less well developed nations. The Society has also assisted in the organising of emergency relief cover, in particular in the Cook Islands in recent times. The NZSA hosts the site for the Pacific Society of Anaesthetists as part of its ongoing commitment to the Pacific.
