The current RDA MECA provides for full reimbursement of all costs of training. This includes attending examination prep courses and EMAC or EMST. Some DHBs will fund other courses on a case-by-case basis, guided by recommendations from their Anaesthetic Department.
Senior registrars are also entitled to $6,000 and 6 days conference leave, for the use of attending conferences. The clause comes into effect 1 year after passing the Primary Examination. Each registrar is limited to $3,000 and 3 days of conference leave per year.

This annual meeting is held in Auckland, usually in March. The programme for registrars (the “Anaesthetic Registrars’ Day”) takes place the day before the main programme, and is usually free, whereas participants pay a fee for the main programme.
This meeting is held in late November or early December in Auckland. The morning session usually consists of lectures on topics relevant to trainees. The afternoon scientific session allows trainees to present their research to an audience of specialists and trainees, which will be taken into account for their Formal Project assessment.
Dr Sam Wong, of Auckland, won the 2011 NZSA Prize for Best Quality Assurance Project at the 3 December 2011 event.
First held in 2008, and then 2009, this conference has been hugely popular. The workshops held on either side of the conference proper have been fully-subscribed in the past. The next symposium will be held in Sydney in 2012. Details can be found here.
