Health Sector

Anaesthetists are highly trained medical specialists whose skills are widely used in patient care. Anaesthetists spend seven years training to obtain their medical degree and registration and a further five – seven years working in a hospital, gaining experience  and completing post-graduate exams before qualifying as a specialist anaesthetist. A specialist anaesthetist is one of the most highly trained doctors in a hospital.

While our major role is in providing anaesthesia during surgery or day stay procedures, the role encompasses anaesthesia for radiology or radio-therapy procedures, pre-assessment and post-operative care of patients, management of pain – both acute and chronic, intensive care and the management of analgesia during obstetric procedures. You can find us in operating theatres, intensive care units, accident and emergency departments, obstetric units, dentistry and even psychiatry. We are also widely involved in teaching and training undergraduate medical students, postgraduates, midwives, technicians and paramedics.
